Neil Riordan, PA-C, Ph.D.
Director, Bio-Communications Research Institute

Dr. Neil Riordan is an experienced, accomplished scientist/entrepreneur. He possesses broad experience in both the management of healthcare companies and in implementing novel medical protocols and treatments. He has directed one of the nations' leading cancer laboratories for 10 years, Project RECNAC of The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning, and he has proven himself a successful entrepreneur with the launching and/or development of five commercial enterprises in health care related fields, each of which are currently in operation. In addition to his development skills, he is also an accomplished scientist with several issued and pending patents in the fields of stem cells and cancer and publications in many prestigious journals, including British Journal of Cancer and Medical Hypotheses.

Xiaolong Meng, M.D.
Associate Director, Bio-Communications Research Institute

Dr. Xiaolong Meng received a prestigious award for a scientific article about its recent stem cell discovery. The scientific journal article entitled "Endometrial regenerative cells: A novel stem cell population" received BioMed Central's Research Article of the Year in Medicine Award sponsored by Microsoft Research. Dr. Xiaolong Meng, the lead author of the article was in London, England to receive the award at the Royal Society of Medicine alongside Tom Ichim, co-author and CEO of MediStem Laboratories, Inc. The paper was published in November 2007 in the Journal of Translational Medicine. The award recognizes excellence in research that has been made universally accessible through open access publication in one of BioMed Central’s peer reviewed scientific journals. Joseph Casciari, Ph.D.
Senior Research Consultant, Bio-Communications Research Institute

Dr. Joseph Casciari holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rochester. His research career includes stints at the University of Washington, the National Institutes of Health, and the Bio-Communications Research Institute, where he currently serves as a Senior Research Consultant.

As a research scientist at the Bio-Communications Research Institute, Dr. Casciari investigated the potential use of intravenous vitamin C as a therapy for cancer. His studies included vitamin C pharmacokinetics, effects of vitamin C on in vitro tumor nodules, and analysis of data from a phase I clinical trial. He also carried out experiments on tumor angiogenesis and dendritic cell based immunotherapy research.

Dr. Casciari now lives in Vermont, where he teaches and consults. His current project involves the Gestalt program for paperless charting and data analysis.

James A. Jackson, MT(ASCP)CLS(NCA), Ph.D. BCLD(ABB)

Senior Research Consultant, Bio-Communications Research Institute

Dr. James Jackson holds an Associate degree, two B.S. degrees, an M.S. degree and a Ph.D. in Physiology, Pharmacology, and Biochemistry from the School of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama. Dr. Jackson is a Certified Clinical Laboratory Director and licensed by the State of Kansas.

Dr. Jackson has remained the Laboratory Director for Bio-Center Laboratory for 20 years. During which time, he has also held the position of Senior Research Consultant for The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning International, Inc. He has published 115 scientific articles and received numerous grants for nutrition and cancer research. He was involved in the initial research on I.V. vitamin C and cancer with Dr. Hugh Riordan during that time as well.

He has also presented numerous lectures at national and international meetings. He presented numerous lectures at The Center for the Lunch and Lecture Series and written many articles for the Health Hunter newsletter.

Nina Mikirova, Ph.D.
Senior Research Scientist, Bio-Communications Research Institute

Dr. Mikirova is an experienced scientist who has worked in a variety of scientific fields for more than 30 years. She graduated from Moscow University, Russia, with Ph.D. in 1972. Dr. Mikirova received her second degree in the United States.

In Moscow, Dr. Mikirova worked in the area of cosmic rays, solar activity, bio-medical aspects of radiation and prediction of radiation events for safety of human beings during space flights. Based on combined satellite and space probes of cosmic rays, magnetic and plasma data, Dr. Mikirova (in collaboration with other research centers) developed a working model of the prediction of the big increases of radiation hazards for the cosmic flights due to extremely powerful solar flares. Dr. Mikirova was awarded for her successful research work during the Russian-American joint flight Soyuz - Apollo. During that period Dr. Mikirova published more than 50 articles.

Dr Mikirova joined the Bio-Communications Research Institute in 1997, where she started her work in the area of the electromagnetic field and cancer. Later, her area of interest also included energy metabolism and cancer, anti-angiogenic properties and potential of ascorbic acid as chemotherapeutic agent, nutrients as biological response modifiers, the effect of various nutrients on immune cell functioning, and the effect of nutrition on progenitor stem cells.

Ron Hunninghake, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer, Olive White Garvey Center for Healing Arts

Dr. Ron is the Chief Medical Officer of the Olive White Garvey Center for Healing Arts, the clinical division of The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning International. He is a 1976 graduate of the University of Kansas; served his Internship at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kan.; and was a Resident at the Smoky Hill Family Practice Program in Salina, Kan., in 1982.

Dr. Ron was associated with the Family Practice Group in Minneapolis, Kansas, from 1978 to 1980, and Salina Family Physicians, P.A., in Salina from 1982 to 1989, when he assumed the position of Medical Director at The Center.

Dr. Hunninghake is a Family Practice physician, a board-certified member of the American Holistic Medical Association, a member of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians, the Kansas Medical Society and the Sedgwick County Medical Society.

In addition to his full-time practice at The Center, Dr. Ron is a regular presenter at medical conferences, and The Center's Lunch & Lecture series, an informative lecture on timely, health-related topics combined with a delicious whole food meal served by The Center's restaurant, with more than 200 Conference and educational presentations to his credit.

Chad Krier, N.D., D.C.
Associate Medical Director, Olive White Garvey Center for Healing Arts

Dr. Krier is a board certified Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, Chiropractic Physician and a native of Kansas (Great Bend). Dr. Krier is a graduate of Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, Texas and a graduate of Bastyr University School of Naturopathic Medicine in Seattle, Washington. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Anatomy.

Dr. Krier has worked with various disciplines (M.D., N.D., D.C., P.T., Acupuncturists, and Homeopaths) in the healthcare field and is happy to offer his patients/co-learners a variety of healing modalities including: Orthomolecular Medicine, Botanical Medicine, Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy, Physical Medicine, and Hydrotherapy. When not seeing co-learners, Dr. Krier enjoys coaching girl’s soccer year round, as well as walking, biking and church activities. His greatest joy in life comes from spending time with his wife and four daughters.

Rebecca Kirby, M.D., M.S., R.D.
Physician, Registered Dietician, Olive White Garvey Center for Healing Arts

Dr. Rebecca Kirby is a board certified family practice physician, biochemist, and registered dietitian. She comes to the Olive W. Garvey Center for the Healing Arts from El Paso, Texas, where she served on the faculty at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center as Assistant Professor and Research Director in the Department of Family Medicine.

Dr. Kirby received her medical degree from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas, in 1991, and completed a residency in Family Medicine in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Texas Tech. Dr. Kirby also received a Masters of Science in Biochemistry in 1980 from Texas A&M University and did postgraduate studies in Ireland at University College Cork.

Dr Kirby was a "late-comer" to medicine; her first career was in biochemical and nutrition research. At the University of Texas back in the early 1970’s, Dr. Kirby worked as an assistant in the laboratory of Dr. Roger J. Williams who emphasized biochemical individuality in nutrition.

At the Center Dr. Kirby enjoys practicing nutritional medicine and working with each person’s uniqueness to optimize their health. Dr. Kirby has been at the Center for 5 years and in addition to seeing co-learners, she lectures for the Lunch and Lecture series and provides diet consultations based on food sensitivities.

Glen Hyland, M.D., BCLD
Oncologist, Olive White Garvey Center for Healing Arts

Dr. Glen Hyland is board certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Radiology-Radiation Oncology, and the American Board of Holistic Medicine.

Dr. Hyland is a native of North Dakota and received his medical degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine-B.S.M. in 1971, and received his MD from Northwestern University Medical School in 1973.

Dr. Hyland's graduate training included an internship at Abott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. in straight medicine from 1973 - 1974. His residency was at Abott-Northwestern Hospital in internal medicine from 1974 - 1976. His fellowship was in Radiation Oncology at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine from 1983 - 1986 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Michael Gonzalez, DS.c., Ph.D.
Senior Research Consultant, Bio-Communications Research Institute

Dr. Michael J. Gonzalez is Professor at the Nutrition Program, School of Public Health in the Medical Sciences Campus, University of Puerto Rico. He earned a Bachelor Degree in Biology and Chemistry (Catholic University), a Masters in Cellular Biology and Biophysics (Nova University), and another Masters in Nutrition and Public Health (University of P.R.). He also has a Doctorate in Health Sciences (Lafayette University), and another Doctorate in Nutritional Biochemistry and Cancer Biology (Michigan State University). He completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Geriatrics in the School of Medicine, University of Puerto Rico. Dr. Gonzalez is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, and has authored over 100 scientific publications. He is an active member on several scientific journal Editorial Boards, such as Biomedicina, the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, and Alternative Medicine Reviews. As a consultant for several companies, he has been responsible for designing formulations of nutritional supplements and pharmaceutical products. At present, he is a consultant for The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning International, in Wichita, Kansas. He has obtained several research awards for his work on Nutrition and Cancer. He is currently Co-Director of RECNAC II project, and Research Director of the InBioMed Project Initiative.

Jorge Miranda-Massari, Pharm.D
Senior Research Consultant, Bio-Communications Research Institute

Dr. Jorge R. Miranda-Massari, is Professor at the School of Pharmacy in the Medical Sciences Campus, University of Puerto Rico, and a Registered Pharmacist. He earned two bachelor degrees at the University of Puerto Rico, one in Science and another in Pharmacy. After earning a Doctorate Degree in Pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, he completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacokinetics at the University of North Carolina. He obtained Post-Doctoral training in Pharmaceutical Care in Nephrology from the University of Pittsburgh, and another one in Clinical Anti-Coagulation from the Medical College of Virginia. Author of numerous scientific publications including editorials, reviews and research data in peer review journals, Dr. Miranda-Massari is a consultant for the prestigious Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning International, in Wichita, Kansas. He is also Director of the Education Branch of the innovative InBioMed Project and Clinical Research Director of the RECNAC-II Project, specialized in Cancer Research. Over the last 10 years he has given hundreds of lectures to a diverse audience on the use of nutrients and botanicals. He is the creator of the first course in Integrative Medicine (Interdisciplinary Classification at a Doctoral Level), and the Advanced Practicum in Integrative Medicine, at the School of Pharmacy, Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. Dr. Miranda-Massari received from the Puerto Rico College of Pharmacist the Innovative Pharmacist Award 2008.

Thomas Levy, M.D.
Author, Board Certified Cardiologist (Website)

Dr. Thomas E. Levy is a board certified cardiologist and he has written six books on health-related issues. Most of his work has centered on how to restore and/or maintain good health in the face of the many different forms of toxicity that all of us face, typically on a daily basis. He no longer has a clinical practice of medicine and cardiology. Rather, he limits himself to research and writing at this time, and he is currently working on his seventh book, Death by Calcium: The Supplement that Kills.

Most of his work over the last ten years has centered on the importance of maintaining a healthy antioxidant status in the body. His work currently is focusing on the importance of liposomal technology as a way to optimally deliver vitamin C, glutathione, and other nutrients into the body orally, appearing to even surpass the bioavailability seen with the intravenous administration of these antioxidants.

Vivienne Matalon, M.D.

Vivienne I. Matalon, M.D., specializes in Internal Medicine, Diabetology and Holistic Medicine. Dr. Matalon is an attending physician at Virtua West Jersey Health System, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, JFK Kennedy Health System and Cooper Medical Center. She is a clinical instructor for UMDNJ Medical School and serves as a member of the advisory board of Arcadia University Physician Assistant Program. Dr. Matalon is the director of TLC Healthcare in Marlton, NJ. She is co-author and medical editor of Self-Care Anywhere, published nationally in journals and media and has been featured on radio and television. Dr. Matalon is currently investigating intravenous ascorbate protocols for cancer patients in three of her clinics.

Garrett Sullivan, M.D.
Physician, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of OBGYN Program in Integrative Medicine (PIM) and Department of Family Medicine, University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC)

Dr. Garrett Sullivan is a physician-scientist with emphasis in biophysics. He earned his B.A. in Mathematics and Biology and his M.D. all from the University of Kansas. Following medical school, from 2004-2005 he spent a post-doctoral research year focused on Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, and Orthomolecular Medicine with the KUMC PIM, affiliated with The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning, International; from 2005-2008 he completed his residency in Family Medicine with the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Tulsa; and from 2008-2009 he served as the first Fellow of Integrative Medicine with the KUMC PIM.

He has recently joined the KUMC faculty and continues his academic development. Dr. Sullivan is currently working toward a Masters of Science in Clinical Research and has been accepted as a Fellow both with the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Family Medicine Sunflower Clinical Scholars Program, as well as with the NIH-supported Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Clinical Research Curriculum Program.

Dr. Sullivan currently splits time between research, teaching, and clinical endeavors. As a clinician board certified in Family Medicine, he specializes in integrative oncology and treating chronic conditions using Orthomolecular and Functional Medicine. He also works extensively in the PIM Infusion Clinic and contributes to basic and translational research using IVC.

Marsha McCray, R.N.
Registered Nurse, Olive White Garvey Center for Healing Arts

A registered nurse with 28 years of clinical experience, Marsha enjoys the positive environment at The Center. Marsha has been with The Olive W. Garvey Center for Healing Arts since 1987. "I enjoy working here because we look at each patient/co-learner individually," she says. "We allow them to be an active participant in regaining their health and well-being." One of the ways she serves the special needs of patients/co-learners at The Center is by providing auricular therapy, a specialized approach to treating pain and improving health. She also performs tests such as EKG and administering numerous iv therapies. Her experience includes psychiatric nursing, office nursing and utilization review. Marsha is a graduate of St. Francis School of Nursing, Wichita, Kansas.

Jerry Tiemeyer, B.S., M.T.(ASCP)
Manager, Bio-Center Loboratory

Jerry Tiemeyer is a registered Medical Technologist who received his degree from Kansas State University and Via-Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center. He served as Manager of the Chemistry and Special Chemistry departments from 1974 to 1994 while at Via-Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center. In 1994 he joined the staff at the Bio-Center Laboratory where he has served as the Manager for the past 13 years.
